Cyber Safety Tips When Using Zoom Conferencing

As we all struggled with unexpected lockdown and remote working, there was a huge rush to download video conferencing apps to enable work team meetings and face to face contact with family and friends. According to App Annie during the second week of March,  more than 62 million video conferencing apps were downloaded.

One of the most popular was Zoom but very quickly it suffered severe criticism for its failure to secure data and privacy for the user. Reports of uninvited “zoom bombings” soared.

Listed below are 10 quick tips to help make your Zoom video meeting more secure:

1. Keep up to date: Ensure the latest version of Zoom is being used and implement updates immediately.

2. Always use passwords as well as a randomly generated meeting IDs. Do not repeat meeting IDs.

3. Never share the meeting ID or password on any other form of social media

4. As host, disable the option to imbed the password in a one click meeting link and require the password to be input by every meeting participant.

5. Enable the waiting room function so that the host can greet every participant and admit them to the meeting.

6. Enable the “hide billing information from administrators” feature found in the  Administration – Advanced section.

7. Rather than downloading the Zoom app, enter the meeting by using the web interface facility

8. If discussing highly sensitive or confidential information, ensure a unique meeting ID and multi-factor authentication for passwords.

9. Control the ability to record meetings: give permission on a “needs only” basis.

10. Ensure any recordings are encrypted.

These few easy steps will go a long way to providing greater security and privacy when using the Zoom app.
